In 2024, Minsk became the center of numerous chess events, attracting both local and international participants. We present an overview of the key moments of the year.

From July 11 to 21, 2024, a major international chess tournament "Minsk-2024" took place in Minsk, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of grandmaster David Bronstein. The tournament featured 204 chess players from five countries, including 10 international grandmasters and 6 international masters. The winner was Russian grandmaster Pavel Ponkratov, second place went to Maxim Samusenko, and third place was taken by Vladimir Burmakin. Among women, the best were Veronika Abramenko and Margarita Bendik.

The "Minsk-2024" tournament became the largest chess event of the year in Belarus, contributing to the strengthening of international ties and the popularization of chess in the region.

In December 2024, the Belarusian Chess Championship among men and women (First League) was held in Minsk. In the men's tournament, the victory was claimed by Mikhail Spizarny, with Mikhail Naumenko in second place, and Artem Belyavsky in third. In the women's tournament, the first place was taken by Viktoriya Dorosheva, followed by Maria Borovikova and Milena Sidorenya.

The championship identified new leaders in Belarusian chess and demonstrated a high level of participant preparation.

On December 24, 2024, within the framework of "Moscow Days" in Minsk, a match took place between the teams of Minsk and Moscow. This event reinforced friendly relations between communities and facilitated the exchange of experience among chess players.

The match symbolized the chess cooperation and the strengthening of cultural ties between Belarus and Russia.

Throughout the year, various tournaments for young chess players were held in Minsk, including the "Tournament of 100 Wonders" in December 2024, where children born in 2007 and younger competed. These events contribute to the development of chess among youth and the identification of new talents.

Junior tournaments play a key role in popularizing chess and nurturing future champions.

In September 2024, an open championship of the Minsk State Palace of Children and Youth in chess took place, which involved chess players of the second category and above. The tournament provided an opportunity for young athletes to elevate their mastery and gain competitive experience.

Such championships are an important part of the chess life of the community, contributing to the growth of skill levels and the motivation of participants.

Overall, 2024 was filled with chess events in Minsk, reflecting the growing interest in this ancient game and reaffirming the status of the community as one of the centers of chess life in the region.
