In 2024, Skopje became the center of several significant chess events, attracting attention from both local and international enthusiasts of this ancient game. We present a review of the key moments of the outgoing year.

In December, the international chess tournament Skopje Open took place in Skopje, featuring the participation of 82 chess players, including representatives from Azerbaijan: Eltaj Safarli, Zaur Hamidov, Narmine Mamedova, and Elnur Aliyev. The tournament's top seed was Eltaj Safarli.

The Skopje Open tournament reaffirmed Skopje's status as an important chess hub in the region. The participation of strong international players, such as Safarli, enhances the prestige of the tournament and stimulates interest in chess among the youth.

In July, Skopje will host the European Fischer Chess Championship, attracting attention from leading chess players on the continent.

The holding of the European Fischer Chess Championship in Skopje showcased the city’s capability to organize high-level events. This event contributed to popularizing various chess disciplines and strengthening international ties within the chess community.

In June, Azerbaijani Grandmaster Eltaj Safarli won the tournament in Voivodina (Serbia), marking a significant achievement in his career.
