Highlights of the Chess Year in London: Achievements and Events of 2024

In 2024, London reaffirmed its status as one of the leading chess centers in the world, serving as the venue for major tournaments and events. We present an overview of key chess happenings that took place in the British capital over the past year.

From October 3 to 12, 2024, the second season of the Global Chess League was held in London, gathering six teams led by prominent grandmasters, such as Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Viswanathan Anand. The tournament was played in a rapid format with a time control of 20 minutes per game. The Triveni Continental Kings team claimed victory in the tournament, with the Russian chess player Valentina Gunina making a significant contribution to the team’s success.

The holding of the Global Chess League in London attracted the attention of the global chess community and underscored the role of the city as a center for international chess competitions.

From November 29 to December 6, 2024, London will host the 14th International Chess Tournament, the London Chess Classic. The tournament will see the participation of English grandmaster Gawain Jones, who scored 5 points out of 7 possible. The tournament features eight participants, all holding the 16th category with an average rating of 2637.6.

Gawain Jones's success in the domestic tournament was a significant achievement for British chess and inspired young players in the country.

The year 2024 was a remarkable and successful one for the chess community of London. The hosting of major international tournaments and the participation of leading grandmasters further strengthened the position of the city on the chess map and contributed to the popularization of chess among a wider audience. It is expected that in 2025 London will continue to delight us with new chess events and achievements.
