Chess Events in Canada: Results of 2024

In 2024, Canada became the center of global chess events, hosting several significant tournaments and showcasing a high level of organization. We present to your attention the key moments of the chess life in Canada over the past year.

2024 Candidates Tournaments took place in Toronto

From April 3 to 22, 2024, in Toronto, the men's and women's Candidates Tournaments were held, determining the challengers for the World Chess Championship. Both tournaments were held simultaneously in one venue, marking a historic event for the chess world. The winner of the men's tournament was Indian grandmaster Gukesh Dammara, becoming the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament and a contender for the title of world champion. In the women's tournament, the victory was claimed by Tan Zhongyi from China.

Challenges with visas before the Candidates Tournament

A month before the Candidates Tournaments, problems arose regarding the acquisition of Canadian visas for participants, especially from Russia and India. FIDE publicly appealed to the Canadian government, urging expedited visa processing, threatening to relocate the tournament to another country. Ultimately, all participants received their visas on time, and the tournaments took place as planned in Toronto.

Successes of the Canadian team at the Chess Olympiad

In September 2024, at the 45th Chess Olympiad, the Canadian team achieved remarkable results. In the second round of the open tournament, Canada played to a draw against the strong team of Norway, despite the absence of Magnus Carlsen in their lineup. This result underscored the rising level of Canadian chess players on the international stage.

Development of chess in Canada

In 2024, Canada continued its active development of chess movement. The increase in the number of chess clubs, tournaments, and educational programs contributed to the popularity of the game among both youth and adults. The Chess Federation of Canada reported an increase in registered members, indicating a growing interest in chess in the country.

Commemorative events of the year

In 2024, Canada also commemorated the holding of memorial tournaments in honor of the outstanding chess players of the past. These events not only honored the memory of great players but also helped strengthen the chess traditions in the country.

In conclusion, the year 2024 became an important milestone in the history of Canadian chess. The successful hosting of international tournaments, the growth of popularity of the game, and the achievements of the national team indicate that Canada is confidently moving toward the status of one of the leading chess nations in the world.
