In 2024, Moscow has become the center of significant chess events, reflecting both sports achievements and organizational innovations.
One of the key events was the Moscow Open 2024, an international chess forum held from July 16 to July 20. The forum celebrated its 20th anniversary and gathered over 1000 participants from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Egypt. As part of the forum, for the first time, a Star Match took place, wherein the world champion in rapid and blitz Sergey Karyakin achieved victory over European champion Ernest Inarkiev. The winners of the Russian Cup stages were Grandmaster Zhamshid Tsydypov among men and FIDE Master Ekaterina Gol'tseva among women.
In December, Moscow hosted an international chess tournament organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This event marked a milestone as Russian chess players participated under the national flag for the first time in nearly three years. The tournament included representatives from Russia, China, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran.
In March 2024, Moscow hosted the International Chess Festival "Aeroflot Open" in a renewed format. Instead of three tournaments based on rating distribution, an open tournament for chess players with FIDE ratings above 2300 was organized, alongside a separate stage of the Youth Cup. The prize fund of the main event amounted to 15 million rubles, of which the winner received 3 million.
In June, a prestigious rapid chess tournament "Chess Stars — 2024" took place in the capital. The tournament started on June 26 and attracted attention, thanks to a spectacular format with limited time for moves.
In December in Reutov, Moscow region, the Chess Club of Sergey Karyakin opened its doors. The club's opening was part of the project "Podmoskovnye Chess Evenings" aimed at popularizing chess in the region.
These events demonstrate the ongoing development and popularization of chess in Moscow, reinforcing its status as one of the leading centers of chess life in Russia and the world.
