Results of the Chess Year in London: Achievements and Events of 2024

In 2024, London reaffirmed its status as one of the leading chess centers in the world, serving as a venue for major tournaments and events. We present an overview of key chess events that took place in the British capital over the past year.

From October 3 to 12, 2024, London hosted the second season of the Global Chess League, which gathered six teams led by the world's top grandmasters, such as Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Viswanathan Anand. The tournament was conducted in a rapid format with a 20-minute time control per game. The Triveni Continental Kings team won the tournament, featuring Russian chess player Valentina Gunina, who made a significant contribution to the team's success.

The holding of the Global Chess League in London attracted the attention of the international chess community and emphasized the city's role as a hub for international chess competitions.

From November 29 to December 6, 2024, London will host the 14th International Chess Tournament London Chess Classic. The tournament will be won by English grandmaster Gawain Jones, who scored 5 points out of a possible 7. The tournament gathered eight participants, all of whom had a category of XVI with an average rating of 2637.6.

Gawain Jones's success at the domestic tournament was a significant achievement for British chess and inspired young chess players across the country.

2024 has been a fruitful and successful year for the chess community of London. The organization of major international tournaments and the participation of leading grandmasters strengthened the city's position on the chess map and helped popularize chess among a broader audience. It is expected that in 2025, London will continue to delight us with new chess events and achievements.
