In 2024, Warsaw became the center of significant chess events, attracting the attention of the global community. We present an overview of key tournaments and achievements that left a notable mark in the chess life of the Polish capital.
In May 2024, Warsaw hosted a stage of the Grand Chess Tour series - Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland. The tournament gathered 10 of the strongest grandmasters in the world, including Magnus Carlsen, who had an impressive series with 10 consecutive victories and took first place with a result of 26 out of 36 possible points.
This event confirmed Warsaw's status as an important center for international chess competitions and attracted the attention of numerous chess enthusiasts.
Within the same tournament, Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi showcased an outstanding rapid play, winning five consecutive games and finishing the rapid segment with a result of 13 out of 18 points, edging out Magnus Carlsen by just one point.
Wei's success demonstrated a high level of competition and intense rivalry, characteristic of tournaments held in Warsaw.
In September 2024, the 45th World Chess Olympiad took place in Budapest, where the Polish team, consisting of Warsaw's chess players, achieved impressive results, confirming their high level of preparation and striving for new achievements on the global stage.
The performance of the Polish team at the Olympiad strengthened the country’s position in the global chess community and inspired young players for further development.
Throughout the year, Warsaw actively developed its chess infrastructure: new clubs were established, youth tournaments were held, and educational programs aimed at popularizing chess among the youth were implemented.
These initiatives contribute to the growing interest in chess and the formation of a new generation of talented players in the Polish capital.
