In 2024, Tbilisi confirmed its status as one of the leading chess centers in the world, hosting prestigious tournaments and achievements. We present an overview of key events and successes of Georgian chess players over the past year.
In August 2024, the first stage of the Women's Grand Prix for the 2024-2025 years took place in Tbilisi. The tournament brought together 20 of the strongest female chess players in the world and was marked by the victory of Alina Kashlinskaya, who scored 6 points and received a prize of €18,000. Georgian chess player Nana Dzagnidze shared third place, demonstrating a high level of play.
The presence of such a prestigious tournament in Tbilisi underscored the rich chess heritage of Georgia and its contribution to the development of women's chess on the international arena.
In September 2024, the 45th World Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest. The women's national team of Georgia took 6th place, while the men's team – 19th. Notably, Nana Dzagnidze excelled by winning a bronze medal in the individual tournament on the first board.
These results affirm the high level of training of Georgian chess players and their ability to compete with the strongest teams globally.
During the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of FIDE in Budapest, the Georgian women’s team was recognized as the best women’s team of all time, while legendary chess player Nona Gaprindashvili was awarded a special prize for her outstanding achievements and contributions to the development of chess.
These awards highlight the significant influence of Georgian chess on the world stage and the recognition of achievements by elite sportsmen in the country.
Throughout the year in Tbilisi, chess infrastructure actively developed: various-level tournaments were held, new chess clubs and schools were opened, aimed at popularizing chess among the youth and enhancing the mastership of the players.
These initiatives contribute to strengthening chess traditions in Georgia and nurturing a new generation of talented chess players.
The year 2024 was successful and eventful for the chess community of Tbilisi. The organization of major international tournaments, recognition of the achievements of Georgian chess players, and development of infrastructure confirm the desire of the region to enhance its position on the global chess map. We hope that in 2025, Tbilisi will continue to surprise us with new achievements and bright events in the world of chess.
