The year 2024 has become significant and remarkable for Ukrainian chess. We present to your attention five key events that determined the development of chess in Ukraine this year.
Chess Olympiad 2024: Participation of Ukrainian Teams
From September 11 to 22, the 45th World Chess Olympiad took place in Budapest. The men's team of Ukraine took 16th place, scoring 15 points, while the women's team finished the tournament in 8th position with 16 points.
The performance of Ukrainian teams at the Olympiad demonstrated a stable level, but the results indicate the need to strengthen preparation and attract new talents to increase competitiveness on the world stage.
Victory over the USA Team at the Olympiad
In the 4th round, the men's team of Ukraine achieved a sensational victory over the first-ranked USA team with a score of 2.5:1.5. A key role was played by Vasily Ivanchuk, who defeated Wesley So.
This victory showcased the high potential of Ukrainian chess players and their ability to compete against the strongest teams in the world, which fuels optimism for the future of national chess.
Performance of the Women's Team without the Musytski Sisters
The women's team of Ukraine participated in the Olympiad without leading players—the Musytski sisters, Anna and Maria. Nonetheless, the team showed a commendable result, finishing 8th.
The absence of leaders could weaken the team; however, the chess players showed unity and the will to win, which reinforces the depth of the roster and potential for further development.
Unsuccessful Results in the Last Round against Serbia
In the concluding 11th round, the men's team of Ukraine suffered a defeat from the Serbian team with a score of 0.5:3.5, which affected their final position in the tournament.
This loss indicates the necessity of analysis and work on mistakes to avoid similar situations in the future and improve results in international competitions.
