The outgoing year 2024 has been rich and fruitful for the chess community of Kyiv. We present you with a selection of the most significant events that have left a remarkable mark in the chess life of the capital of Ukraine.
In December 2024, the 92nd Ukrainian Championship among men and the 83rd Ukrainian Championship among women took place in Lviv. A total of 127 chess players and 33 female chess players from all over the country participated in the tournament.
Kyiv chess players achieved high results, confirming the city’s status as one of the centers for chess development in Ukraine.
In September 2024, the 45th World Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest. The men's team of Ukraine, which included Kyiv players, achieved a historic victory over the strongest team in the world—the USA team, with a score of 2.5:1.5.
A special mention should be made of the contribution of Kyiv grandmasters to this achievement, which highlights the high level of training of the capital's sportsmen.
In December 2024, a tournament "Chess Arsenal" was held in Kyiv—an open individual-team championship of the Holosiyivskyi district among schoolchildren not older than 2012. In the final part, 11 schools of the district participated, representing 34 players.
The winner of the tournament was Andrey Artamonov, showcasing a stellar result. This event witnesses the growing interest in chess among the youth of Kyiv and the effective work of children's chess schools.
In December 2024, Kyiv chess player Roman Degtyarev became the champion of Ukraine among men, scoring 7.5 points and outstripping Mikhail Oleksienko by additional indicators.
