In April 2024, Riga hosted the traditional international chess festival "Riga Spring", gathering more than 200 participants from various countries. The winner of the tournament was local grandmaster Aleksey Shirov, who has confirmed his status as one of the strongest chess players in Latvia.
This success of Shirov underscores his renowned form and contributes to the promotion of chess in the region.
In July 2024, young Riga player Elina Bakulina won a gold medal at the European Championship among girls under 16, held in Prague. Her victory became a significant achievement for Latvian chess and an inspiration for young athletes throughout the country.
Bakulina's achievement highlights the high potential of the new generation of Riga chess players and the effectiveness of local chess schools.
In September 2024, the 45th World Chess Olympiad was held in Budapest. The Latvian team, which included Riga players, showed a commendable result, finishing 13th among 180 teams. Grandmaster Igor Kovalenko particularly distinguished himself, scoring 7 out of 10 possible points on the first board.
The performance of the Latvian team at the Olympiad confirms the high level of preparation and the competitiveness of Riga's chess players on the international stage.
In November 2024, a new chess club "Caïssa" opened in Riga, equipped with modern facilities and intended for hosting tournaments of various levels, as well as training for children and adults. The opening of the club is a significant step in developing the chess infrastructure of the region.

In December 2024, Riga chess player Arthur Neikšans became the champion of Latvia, achieving victory in the national championship held in Ventspils. His confident play and strategic thinking allowed him to outmaneuver strong opponents and claim the title.
