In 2024, Zagreb became the center of the chess world by hosting the prestigious SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz tournament, the third stage of the Grand Chess Tour series. From July 10 to 14, the world’s leading grandmasters gathered in Croatia’s capital to compete in rapid and blitz chess.
Fabiano Caruana brilliantly achieved a first place finish at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz 2024 tournament in Zagreb, scoring 15 points out of 18 possible.
Caruana dominated the event, finishing the rapid tournament with a result of +6=3, confidently securing the top position ahead of the blitz stage. His dominance continued into blitz, where he grabbed 12 out of 18 possible points, allowing him to match the record set by Magnus Carlsen five years ago, accumulating a total of 27 out of 36 possible points.
Fabiano Caruana claimed victory in the recently concluded SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz tournament in Zagreb with a result of 27/36, matching the points record of Magnus Carlsen.
Among the other participants in the tournament, it is worth mentioning Wesley So, Maxim Vachier-Lagrave, and Alireza Firouzja, who shared second place with a score of 23 points. Jan Nepomniachtchi also showed an impressive performance, achieving several notable victories, including a game against Caruana in the first round of blitz.
The tournament in Zagreb not only served as a venue for setting new records but also helped to boost the growing popularity of chess in the region. The successful organization and high level of competition solidified Zagreb’s status as an important center of chess life.
